RE XXX question

I've noticed there are 2 different types of XXX subs it's probably the newer and older ones i was just wondering what's the difference and which one is better???

The older ones don't need as much power the newer ones can get louder and can takea more power. Both sound good. The newer ones also cost more and are much bigger.

Sorry but anyway this guy is selling a Zapco C2K 9.0. Now normally these amps are 2200wrms but he has a factory modifies unit which hits 2 x 2200.

Do you guys know if this is possible and if so will it pop a single new XXX sub?

I doubt a modified C2K 9.0 can do 2x2200 rms unless you strap 2 amps together. Anyway the new XXX can take a ton of power.

it's rated at 2200 at 1 ohm.

The mosfets in that amp can't handle 4400 watts of current. He's fulla crap.

I'm sure your aware with the 9.0 you get a digital dash board thing that gives you alsorts of readings watts, voltage etc now what he did to prove it to me was sent me a video via email to confirm this! the thing was reading into the 21 and 2200 watts per channel:|
But just to make sure i asked Zapco themselves and they said the amps with the (db drag mod) have been known to go to that much! but aslong as the sub ( i'l need 2 with that) can handle the power that's the main thing. Btw Im sure you believe me but i'd be more then happy to forward the email onto yourselves???

They only use the mosfets in them for switching the rest is done by bipolar i think.

That's for dB drag use. For everyday sustained use, the FETs just wouldn't handle it, they would pop pretty quickly. At 4400 watts, we're talking about over 360 amps of current traveling through them. The number of FETs they can fit in one of those things is limited, and they can't sustain that kind of current; they would heat up and literally explode and smoke.

If you put it like that then you are 100% correct! It was just a burp that he measured the power in. I think i'll need 2 XXX subs with that much power and it's just too much! Even one XXX will i think be more then enough for me! one.

Up to 4kw? if so wow!!!! lol i've only got a 1kw amp which i am thinking of changing but DSP6 will come first. Anyway some body contacted me regarding the sale of an 02/03 RE XXX and said he has an 18'' but can be re coned to a 12??? that left me totaly confused. Can that be done and then is the box made for an 18 or 12

The most exspensive part of the RE XXX is the motor. You can put a new basket and then recone it to a 12. Hell just getting the RE XXX 18 would be fun. I used to run one in my HT for a while, it was scary loud. Nothing like 12 cubes tuned to 18hz with 1000 watts.

12 cubes??? lol that's soo awesome, it's a shame i only have roughly 6 cu ft maximum and even that might be pushing it!

Some1 offered me a used but mint DSP6 for $900 it comes with all its controller but i think it mite be a bit expensive for a second hand unit unless you guys think otherwise. Just have to try arranging my finances now and see if he budges from his original quote.

You can fit the xxx 18" in a smaller box if you want and tune higher. Probally the smallest box would be 4-5 cubes sealed and 5-6 cubes ported for the 18.

The older subs can take about 2000 watts rms the newer subs about 3000-4000 watts rms.

are we talking like a quick "burp" like they do at some DB-drag shows, or can you play continuously at 3000-4000wRMS whit one sub?

does this go for the 12" subs aswell? seeing as how they move less air around they might get less cooling? correct me if im wrong

Id like to know where you heard this, I dont meen to sound like im attacking you. Its just that Im about to order an 12"xxx. but haven't decided yet

The new RE XXX can take 3-4k watts if you are careful. With burps it can take even more. Now I don't recomend running more then 2.5k watts or so. 2k watts is plenty. That is what the RMS is anyways or close to it. Trying to give a sub 3-4k watts is no easy task. You will need bigger alt, extra batteries and probally 2 amps, and a ton of 0 ga wire or so. Even with 2k watts to the RE XXX is going to need extra battery bigger alt, and 0-1 ga wire.

I did the opposite of what most people do,
bought an amp (4,3kwRMS) and two Odyssey PC 2150 batteries
now Im looking for a sub, or maby 2

the sound is pretty pure, but I havent had the chanse to test it to its full potential

I doubt it is any more pure than MTX, Rockford Fosgate, or hell, even Sony and Lanzar for that matter. Power is power, as long as you don't push an amp beyond it's limits, it will sound just as good as the next amp.

That's not the experience i've had though! I've tried loads of amps sometimes one after the other on the same sub(s) and always noticed a difference so your statement sounded a bit strange to me although i've never known you to be wrong.

As long as you don't try to get more than 300 watts out of it, you'll be fine, and it will sound fine. The better quality the amp, the closer to it's rated wattage it will be able to put out reliably. Once you get into higher quality amps like MTX, Zapco, and Cadence, they usually put out more than rated.

Yeh that makes sense to me also not all amps have the same damping factors will that also make a difference?
