Jeep Grand Cherokee Laredo Problems

I just joined. I need any info. anyone can give me. Sadly, I have had all the same problems. I have had 4 window regulators, 2 mater controls for drivers window, on my 3rd cd player now, not to mention all the transfer case, transmission and lighting and battery problems. My car is a 99 JGC 4x4, with less than 46, 000 miles.

My new problem is my rear tail blinker/signal. I have been in the shop 7 times in 10 weeks. I kid you not. Each time I go in they replace the rear tail lamp housing and tell me now it is "fixed". I keep thining I am on candid camera because it stops working and I have to go back in for them to fix it. I had this happen a few years back but new bulbs fixed it when the signal would blink fast. Now, because I paid over $400 10 weeks ago to fix, I have to bring it back to the shop because they have a 1 year warranty. I know all the mechanics names by heart because I see them weekly! The rear left signal goes out, the front left signal blinks VERY fast and the light on the dash board indicating the signal also blinks F A S T. I am going back in on Wed. or Thur. and want to give them new info. They obviously don't know how to fix it since it keeps breaking. It works for 2-11 days, then the signal goes out again. I keep thinking there has to be an electrical problem somewhere? ** my cd player also went out (got the "err" on the panel) the same day this problem originally occured. They said I need to replace the cd player, but I am on my 3rd one..and no longer under warranty.

I am at a loss. I spend about $1400 a year on repairs, NOT maintenance. I rotate my tires every 7500 miles, do regular tune ups, oil changes, etc .to keep my car running good but nothing helps.

I also want to mention, this in NOT a Jeep dealer I am taking it to but a shop that ONLY handles Jeeps. They are a Jeep specialist. I was thinking I should take it to the dealer instead but since I already paid the Jeep shop and it is under warranty, I am kind of stuck with them. I doubt they will give me a refund, especially since they have looked at it weekly for 10 weeks. So frustrating.

I came to this forum looking for information regarding problems I was having with my recently purchased 1999 Grand Cherokee Limited. I read through most of the posts, and found that the brakes, transmission bumping, and window regulators are the most common complaints, with a few regarding engine performance, or lack thereof on occasion, thrown in to sweeten the experience.
I noticed a reference to a "TSB" in one of the threads, and this got me to thinking -- usually a problem right??
I did a search for TSBs, and found a most enjoyable and enlightening page. For $15.00, I found a location called INFOTRAXX, where I could print off all of the TSBs for my 1999 Jeep Grand Cherokee.
Now I can take my Jeep into my dealership, and ask them to perform the recommended repair as instructed in the Technical Service Bulletin, and make my Jeep an enjoyable vehicle for me!! I fully intend to pay for the services, and have no problem doing so, it just breaks my heart to hear so many people complaining about problems, that it is obvious the dealers and Chrysler are aware of, and have fixes for, but they will not perform the repairs. I firmly believe most of the people I have read threads from in this forum, have probably already paid more to have many of these problems addressed by local service shops due to the dealers acting like there is no known problem.
If anyone is interested, I would recommend going to http://www.infotraxx.com/index.php and sign up for their service to read and print these TSBs. I found enough information in 5 minutes to make the $15.00 charge worthwhile. Like why your window regulators keep failing, and how to fix them!!!

Has anyone out there seen any information on a class action lawsuit against Jeep for these defective window regulators. Seems that there is so many complaints, and the dealers even acknowledge that they break all the time. I am willing to join in on one.

Ok so I took my 04 Grand Cherokee in after getting the class action law suit paper work. DCX covered cost of part and labor because I complained about brake problems before my warranty was up. They changed front rotor and pads. Which I also change them once myself only to have the problem recur again. After getting the car back I still have bad steering wheel shake while braking. They told me my rear rotors need to be spun and are the source of my problem. So my question is, will the rear rotor cause my steering wheel to shake like it does while braking? Or are my calipers hanging up in the front?

Any feed back would be greatly appreciated.

I have the same problem with my Jeep 1993, have you find a solution? many people remplace the bearings or the axes, have you done that?

I have a 2001 GC Laredo and since I sent in the last payment check in Feb 2006, I have had to replace the valve body in the transmission due to slipping (~1000), 2 cooling fan switches, and just recently 1 passenger side window regulator @ $270 . This car has been nickel and dime'ng me since it's been paid off. If this keeps up I'm going to unload it for a honda or toyota. Normally I keep my cars for 10 years and have found no domestic cars up for the challenge. Ironically, I was very reluctant to buy another domestic car after having multiple bad experiences with GM. Unfortunately I was optimistic and thought I would give Jeep a chance. How wrong I was.

BTW - the jeep is a gas hog. The one I have never gets above 20 mpg on highway and around town it's usually around 15-16 mpg.

I am having the same problem with my window regulators. I just replaced the right passenger side window about 3 months ago. My driver side front door window regulator just went out yesterday. If there isn't a recall, there should be. I have a 2003 Jeep Grand Cherokee. I found a website to purchase these regulators with the motor already assembled. All you have to do is bolt it on. The first time I did it, it took me a little bit, but it's easy after that. You'll save $300.00 if you do it yourself. MONSTERAUTOPARTS.COM. There only $89 on there. Good luck!

i am having some of the same problem it sounds like , i got the laredo with 14 600 miles on it , it has about 21 200 right now , about 2 months ago i was driving and the panel lights go out , they said it was some kind of board , what is scarey is that when the panel lights go so dont the back brake lights . its been back 5 times for problems , the enginelite comes on when driving i keep bringing it in as soon as it happens , first they said it was the board , thay said the fix was a code in the computer that dident work , back in a few days , this time they put the board it , after waiting 8 days they dont have any in stock said they were back ordered , put board it works , lite is on again in a week bring back this time they said switch . and a loose ground wire under the back seat , i looked today behind the seat and the did move the seat because the carpet wasent all the way down, so i quess they did do something , but again to day i was going to the air port to pick up my son . again the the light comes on , the engine warning light , thats the lite that comes on before any thing else then everything happens after that, i am not happy with this jeep , i told myself not to buy a dodge and i did , now i know why i stayed away from them ,, but with all that the thing drives and handle s nice but no a recall is comming out next week for fluid in the trans , from the ac, so get it checked ,

Add me to the list of Jeep owners who are replacing the power window regulators/motors. I had the dealer replace the front driver side in June 2006 on my 2003 Jeep. The warranty had expired 3 months earlier. (Of Course) The front passenger side broke today. Thank goodness for duct tape! I am going to try to get Chrysler to pay for this one. If not, I will order the part and install it myself. The last one was $288.

BTW, I also recently had my cooling fan replaced. I saw a few replies alluding to over heating and air conditioning blowing warm. These are symptoms of a bad cooling fan.

Glad to see I am not the only one having problems. I have one problem that I have not read in the previous postings yet.

We had just purchased a JGC w/ 84K miles on it. It is a 4.0L 2WD. A couple of weeks ago my wife calls me to say that our 2000 JGC will start but shuts off after 5 seconds. I started the Jeep and got the same problem. The engine shut off after exactly 5 seconds regardless if I had it reved up. It seemed to me to be a computer problem. I disconnected the battery for a few minutes and reconnected it. The JGC started right up with no problems. The next day I cleaned the connections - to rule that out - and the Jeep ran fine for a few weeks. Today, after having lunch we had the same problem. The Jeep shut down after 5 sec. This time the problem was not corrected with a simple battery disconnect. It shut down again after I reconnected. The only solution I arrived at was to start the Jeep and in the five seconds that it was on have my wife rev the engine while I simultaneously disconnected the battery. This worked. I told her to let the JGC idle for a few seconds while I reconnected the battery. I noticed that when I reconnected the battery the idle seemed to slow down and I almost thought it was going to die again, but it didn't.

Anybody have the same prob? Any suggestions, other than having the battery tested or getting a new one?

I have a 2001 Laredo and there is a clicking noise coming from the engine. After looking under the hood (oh, and I don't know much automotive jargon) the clicking noise was coming from a silver apparatus on top. Any help? Thanks...

Well, I found myself stumbled across this site/forum as I was SEARCHING for 2 days now online & phone to find best way to replace my window regulator (L front), passenger side (R, front) busted 8 WEEKS AGO! Since was pass side, I spent $60 to have "them" wedge window shut instead of replace parts. NOW dr side gone .. hearing/reading alot about headaches of trying to save $$ by getting aftermarkets which are cheap replacements, little or no warranty. VS. a budget buster I can not ( & should NOT HAVE TO!) afford for proper replacements. ($700.00!!!) THANKS JEEP!!!!!!!!!!!! i don't have time or MONEY for this.
I was told by Power Window Specialist, it's a simple case of CHEAP PLASTIC PARTS BROKEN.

JUST spent over $250 on some "sensor module" so i could enjoy the luxury of CRANKING my vehicle again....

Already been there done that w/ brake/rotor caliper BS ... in process of filing my paperwork for the Civil SUIT.

I admit i'm tempted to have both windows fixed w/ cheap aftermarket and save myself about $4 or $500 but i can't/won't pass that along to another owner! I'm just PISSED, PISSED, PISSED!
Thinking BYE-BYE JEEP/CHRYSLER .. HELLO HONDA/TOYOTA... as I have read, I'm not alone in that mindset.

Sorry for all the hot air ... going to find something else to "fix" to get my mind off this.

Hi everyone, just joined this site and want to thank everyone for giving us incredible feedbacks, I have a 99 JGCLaredo, this is actually my third Jeep, the biggest headache that I have is with the brakes, not even 800 km I have to change them again, what a headache, but most important feedback that I would want to say is , (not sure if somebody has answered this yet didn't notice), is with the front end and steering wheel shaking like crazy when braking, my past 2 jeeps had the same problem, UNDER THE FRONT BUMPER YOU WILL NOTICE THERE IS A SHOCK THIS IS CALLED A DAMPER SHOCK, CHANGE THAT AND YOUR FEW SECOND WORKOUT WHEN BRAKING WILL BE GONE.............

I have a 1996 Jeep Grand Cherokee that suddenly decided not to start. It was running fine, was shut down, and now will turn over but not start. I have no check engine light and can not get the car to do the self test. I do the turn the ignition on, off, on, off, on, off, on, and never see the check engine light. The check engine light does not come on with all the other lights when the key is turned to on at any time.
The guages also indicate no fuel when it should have about a half tank and it shows no battery voltage, even with a start booster hooked up to the battery. I have swapped the fuel pump and auto shut down relays with known working ones. All the fuses I can find are visually check good. Does anyone have any ideas?

Sorry to hear about your Jeep issues, I feel your pain. I highly recommend after market rotors and pads to replace all your standard factory brake rotors. When your brake rotors warp they cause a million other problems like: damaged CV Boots, damaged axles, damaged tires, damaged stabilizer shocks, damaged sway bar links, etc., etc., etc. All of these cost close to $1K to repair just to have them break again. Replace all four rotors with cross drilled, slotted, heavy duty rotors. I used rotors made by Brembo which have worked fine. Replace stock break pads with high end ceramic pads. The rotors will cost you about $100 each and the high end pads around $50 a set. If you do the work yourself your cost will be around $500 but well worth it. If a shop does the work, probably $800+. This will resolve all your other problems assuming you are problem free when you install the new brake components. The Jeep is a great vehicle, but sticking with defective parts will definately cause continued problems down the road.

Not sure if this will help you or not, but I had a similar problem with my 95 GC, it ended up being the crankshaft position sensor. It would shut off while I was driving it on the freeway, and then not restart. Took it to the dealership three time - they couldn't find anything wrong (of course!) finally on the third time I told them to keep it until they find something wrong. Called me the next day to let me know what it was.

That was the only thing major that ever went wrong with it and it had over 130K mi on it when I traded for a suburban in 2003.

I too just had a window die, pulled the door open thanks to instructions I found here and found several pieces of broken and fairly brittle plastic. I've only owned this 01 Laredo for a little over 2 mos. and am kicking myself for not extending the waranty. I've already sent an email to Jeep Customer Service as there is evidence that I may lose all the windows soon. I'm thinking in jeep doesn't step up I'll buy a 4 pack of window regulators and just keep them on hand.

anyway, i own a 99 jeep grand cherokee laredo....my hubby and I bought it a year ago on our honeymoon (long story, wasn't planned). anyway, when we bought it we had the serpentine belt replaced immediately. it has a straight v-6 engine, and I LOVE IT!!

however my hubby wants to trade it in b/c of other problems:

recently has to have left rear axle bearing replaced, as well as hood shocks
the hood latch is broke, it take two people to open the hood...one to pull the wire inside the grill, one to pull the thingy inside the jeep...

the emergency brake doesn't hold completely..
the rear right brake light it out due to electrical problems...
we just had to have transmission fluid added b/c it was like, completely OUT!

we have 1185++ miles on it, bought it with 105+++ miles.....

i love my jeep and really dont want anything but a jeep.....should we just get a newer model? should i give in and get something else????

I just bought a 93 Grand Cherokee with 185k miles. I understand thats it has a lot of miles and has lost power, but the acceleration while in Drive seems unusually slow/weak when starting out. It feels like the transmission is not fully engadged or something is slipping. When I put it in 2 gear or reverse gear it has a more solid acceleration.

Can anyone suggest what might be the cause of this poor acceleration in OD

My husband I recently bought a 2001 Jeep Grand Cherokee Laredo. we got a really good deal. 56,000 miles, 4x4, excellent condition, very comfortable. Except it was raining yesterday ,not hard just steady, but my husband noticed that the head liner was leaking. On the passenger's side it was soaked and then some in the back by the back hatch. My husband has since figured out (he thinks) that the rubber seals that holds the luggage rack on are leaking. He's going to take it apart, and seal it with silicone. I want to know if any one else has had the problem and if so, I would like to know if you can buy the seals, instead of just patching them. I am so sorry that there seem to be so may problems with everyone's Jeeps. I hope we don't have these problems. I will say for a Jeep that is almost 6 years old, it's a one owner and seems to have been very well taken care of except this. Oh!, and we have one of those fan covers on the gear shift, if you know what I mean, apparently something had spilled on them and they are sticking together. can you buy and replace them?

I need to say something. I happened upon this post while checking out issues with window regulators. I have a Jeep GC Overland and my front window regulator went out, even though it is a couple years old it was covered under warranty. I have also had some other problems that could have expensive, mostly in labor costs, but these were also covered under warranty. I just want to say that you will find forums like this on every vehicle currently in production-guaranteed. I am not a dealer, mechanic or salesman. I just love Jeeps. I had a 96 ZJ and loved it. Yea there were problems but I drove the thing until 200,000 miles. Come on who can say that about any current american made car. I was also a cop and this vehicle was set up as an umarked patrol car. I am hard enough on my vehicles, but nothing is harder on a vehicle than putting it thorugh its paces as cruiser. High speeds, constant idleing, start/stop, quick acceleration, off-road, high speed off-road, quick stopping, evasive driving...you name it, it was done. On normal highway travels I averaged about 22 mpg and on my overland with the mighty V-8 High Output I averaged 24mpg/Hwy on my trip back to MA.

Ok so you have problems. The brakes were a major issue that thankfully Jeep took care of. Should I remind you of the Firestone/Ford incident? As a cop I am aware of more problems and fatalities crediited to this problem (firestone) and am not aware of any, at least that we ran across, credited specifically to Jeep. They fixed the problem and took responsibility for the problem. Seriously though...brake issues like most described...I use the saying, "Fool me once....." you know the rest. Three times of having your rotors replaced by a dealership. Do it right the first repair job and put on quality rotors and pads and you won' have a problem. I will stop you now from any dim witted replies. I know about braking and the reliabilty of your brakes and I never had any problems. I did all my own brake work both OEM/Mopar and Third Party. Brakes, transmissions, exhaust, AC, electrical. What ever problems you have most are covered under warranty and the rest are normal wear and tear parts. I know you all have stated it shouldn't have happened so soon. Well it does and it seems Jeep is at least taking care of this. This vehicle has been more than reliable when MAINTAINED PROPERLY. It has a four-wheel drive system like no other vehicle in the world, except for the HumVee . I have had all but one tire in a five foot snow bank with the other wheel on ice and with the proper knowledge of how to drive , I got out without any problems. I know hundreds of guys that beat up their jeeps day in and day out in areas that most of you have never seen except on TV and love and trust and rely on these vehicles. I am sorry you have problems that at times seem annoying and can be costly. Figure out first how to do the work yourself...you can't blame Daimler Chrysler for the dealerships and their money hungry mechanics. My brother-in-law was a mechanic but I still don't trust them one bit no matter certification or not. I can't appease every one with your problems but understand this as someone who has owned chevy's personnally and driven them as a cop.......I WOULD MUCH RATHER DRIVE A JEEP. True Jeep owners, not posers just understand this saying....It's a Jeep thing! If you don't understand this than you will never be happy with any vehicle you buy, because vehicles have problems and brake down and parts go faulty.

So I say again do your own repairs and keep a constant rigorous maintenance schedule and remember that Daimler Chrysler does take care of their loyal customers. If no one lets the manufacturer know of their problems and concerns than they can't gauge the number of issues and can't submit a nationwide recall. So let them know via email, snail mail or phone in a professional manner and then maybe if every person with this problem complains than Jeep can be aware of the problem and fix it. They aren't all knowing you have to tell them, this could be the manufacturers fault of a certain batch of parts for vehicles from a certain line. It is not necessarily Jeeps fault. The manufacturer was probably skimping on design of the parts for cost sake or any number of problems. If the manufacturer shipped a bad batch of parts there could be hundreds of Jeeps that rolled off the line with this problem. Most likely there are fewer or there would be more people complaining on these forums. Don't gripe on forums until you have at least contacted the company several times....then if they don't fix it and you have complained properly you can hit the forums. I wish you all the best of luck and years of enjoyment from your Jeeps. We Jeep fanatics love them for their quirks. :thumbsup:

I have a 2004 Jeep with 46,000 miles. I replaced the front brakes and rotors at 32,000 and it started vibrating again. I responded to the law suit and got my free inspection--This worthless inspection told me what I already knew. But to correct the problem I would have to pay $337.67. Crazy, to pay to repair JEEP'S defective work is insane. The law suit benefits JEEP it gets them off the hook. It is worth the $3 million JEEP paid to the lawyers and the $77,000 they are paying to the plaintiff to free them of liability. Someone is going to get killed behind thier defective products and if you got the "Free" inspection, then you have simply taken the responsibility.

My answer is to get rid of the lemon. Its a pure lemon. The brake rotors on the rear need resurfacing, I am told that the rear breaks are going bad because the axle is leaking on the brakes., the hood which has only been open 2 times by me except for oilchanges need props. All in 46,000 miles. Who are these lawyers, man they sure screwed up on this one. Or did thay, JEEP could not have done better if they hired them themselves.

I am glad to have this experience, I had just tested the Aspen and was ready to buy, but I will never buy a JEEP Chrysler Product again, Dr Z--read my lips, never again.

I am an extremely frustrated Jeep owner! My brakes seized on me yesterday while I was driving my kids to cheer practice. My husband who is mechanically knowledgable, took apart the front brakes last night. Only to discover that the caliper on the driver side was completely broken and the pads and rotors where shot.

I did some research via internet and found that there is a class action law suit filed against chyrsler due to the rotor and brake problems. I hope this helps all of you that have had similar problems.

I had my front passenger window fixed $ the end of june. on Friday I was driving home from work and was putting up the driver side window and heard the pop of that 10 cent plastic pece that is going to cost me another 400.00 The icing on the cake is that today I was walking out to my jeep to take the plastic garbage bag off the front window only to see the back driver side window sliding into the door after I closed the driver door. This is the 3rd one and for 2 to break in 5 days. When will DC just admitt there is somethig wrong here. I am going to call DC today and burn up all my cell minutes till tis is taken care of. Today is the first time for me on this site and I thank everyone for the info and process they had to go through

I have an 01 jeep grand cherokee limited V8. when I crank it up in the morning or after I get off of work it starts sputtering and sounding like it is about to cut off. The rpm's go very low and then back up. It doesn't do it all the time though. It starts idling roughly when I first crank it up or am sitting at a stop sign or redlight. It has cut off on me on more than one occasion. Most of the time it cranks up after first cutting off. Yesterday it cut off on me and I tried to crank it back but to no avail. After waiting a few min it started right up. It seems to just stall out on me, which is becoming a pain in the butt. I replaced the idle air control, the throttle position sensor and the fuel filter on my jeep. When I replaced the throttle position sensor it fixed the rough ildling but not the cutting off problem. Does anyone think that it could be the fuel pump? I sure hope not, since they are not cheap! Any ideas as to what it could be? If anyone has had this same problem please let me know!
